The Logies have come and gone for another year with actor Samuel Johnson, who played Molly Meldrum in the two-part miniseries Molly, winning the Gold Logie for his portrayal of the music legend.
During his acceptance speech, Johnson, who also won the Silver Logie for Best Actor, said, “I was a very spirited, very confused kid with an excess of energy,
“My dad always saw me dying from too much gusto. I was an outlier of sorts, just desperate to find my place in the world”, he continued
“A place that encouraged me to be truthful to work harder to pursue excellence,” he said, adding, “I did none of that – which is why I’m kind of so thankful”.
Johnson also dedicated his win to his terminally ill sister, Connie, who has been battling various forms of cancer for 30 years and also posted pictures of her and family watching the Logies on Instagram, saying, “My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three-decade long tussle and rather than rolling over, she’s going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins, absurdly”.
Johnson, who started a charity called Love Your Sister, also revealed that he will remain retired from acting until his charity reaches their financial goal, saying, “Until our charity raises $10 million, I’m not going to act again. Hopefully we can get to that $10 million within three years”.
Also while on stage, Johnson was joined by the man himself, Molly Meldrum, who made a speech of his own, telling the audience how he was first friends with his dad, “I didn’t really know him because I was friends with his dad”, joked that playing him, as was “an old drama Queen like myself” must not have been easy for Johnson, and the praised him saying, “And you did a great job, right”.
But aside from Johnson’s double win, a lot of other things happened throughout the night, including Kerri-Anne Kennerley being inducted to the Logie’s Hall of Fame for her 50 years of service to the industry and, upon receiving her award, not only got a standing ovation, but went on to dedicate it to her husband John, how broke his neck and became paralysed last March, saying “I would give away 50 years of this career just to have you standing right here by my side”.
She then went on to say, “My first Logie and I never knew it was gold,
“I seriously am so very honoured to receive this and I am even more excited not to get it posthumously, not that there haven’t been a few people that tried to bury me before this”.
Another key, and funny, moment of the evening was when Offspring actress Kat Stewart and The Project co-host and comedian Peter Helliar took to the stage wearing the same fuchsia coloured outfits, Stewart a dress and Helliar a tuxedo, to mock “Jacket Gate”, an off camera incident from earlier this year between newsreader Amber Sherlock and journalist Julie Snook.
During their bit, Stewart and Helliar mocked the incident, with Helliar beginning with, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry — you need to change. Can we get wardrobe? Two hours ago I asked you specifically not to wear fuchsia – you need to put a jacket on or something!”
And Stewart coming back with, “I’ve been flatout – I haven’t had time”.
